I thought the Parade of Homes this year was great!
There were a couple reasons for that:
- There were only sixteen houses on Parade this year. When there are fewer than twenty, it’s much more manageable should you decide to see them all. Plus, the design elements and floor plans from one home don’t start to get confused with the same things from another home!
- In years past, it seemed that some of the homes were at the extreme end of the spectrum — either incredibly rustic or over-the-top sleek and modern. This year it felt like there were more homes “in the middle.” Even the more contemporary homes incorporated some cozier aspects so it didn’t feel like you were walking in to George Jetson’s living room. The builders who traditionally bring us a more “country house” vibe did it this year without having it feel like you were walking in to a farmhouse.
- My favorite aspect that a few builders did this year was walls made out of windows that doubled as doors. Sliding panels of windows/doors could be moved to the side so that it felt as though the indoor and outdoor spaces weren’t separated at all. Gretl Crawford’s house had the perfect floor plan for my family! There was a game room which led to a patio dining area with a fireplace which led through those windows/doors to a swimming pool! It was easy to envision the kind of life one would lead living there! Entertaining friends for nine months of the year, and then in the winter, the family staying inside, snugly reading by the fire, while they watched the snow falling through the huge windows!
