You can bet there were a few smiles at the City of Richland offices when they heard that Richland was named the safest mid-sized city in all of Washington state!
That honor comes from the folks at SmartAsset, who dug into data for 333 cities with populations between 65,000 and 250,000. They reviewed four metrics: violent crime rate, property crime rate, motor vehicle fatality rate, and the risk of natural disaster. From there, they put together a composite score for every city in that population range.
Richland’s violent crime rate of 2.5 per 1,000 residents is the 6th-lowest among the 18 Washington cities that made the list.
Its property crime rate of 19.4 per 1,000 residents was 2nd-lowest among Washington cities.
Richland ranked 10th with 8.83 auto fatalities for 100,000 residents, and was given a “relatively moderate” score for disaster risk — same as six other cities in the state. No city had a “relatively low” score for disaster risk.
Richland’s #1 ranking for Washington also makes it the 78th-safest mid-sized city in the U.S. The only other local city to make the list is Kennewick, which ranks fifth in the state and 162nd nationally.
